I resumed shooting film in March of ’24 after a 20 year hiatus. Like most folks, I turned my back on film after being seduced by the simplicity and low cost of shooting digital. However, I missed the rituals and fiddly details of film photography and here I am again.

I get my rolls developed by the excellent local film lab, Color Services. I do all the scanning myself using a Sony a6500 with a 7artisans 60mm macro lens and the amazing VALOI easy35 system. I use a simple but competent negative-to-positive conversion program called SmartConvert and only do minor post-conversion editing. I also try to compose solely in the camera (challenging, as I only have prime lenses) and rarely crop or straighten. You can tell which images have been edited as they are missing the black frame/sprocket holes of the negative. Well, unless they were taken with my Pentax 645, as medium format film is paper-backed and doesn’t have sprocket holes.

Cheers,

Walter
